As 天美麻豆鈥檚 250th year progresses, there鈥檚 still plenty of time to celebrate, with specially designed classes, symposia, exhibits, alumni events, and opportunities for community service.
鈥淪ummer and fall will be filled with wonderful ways for the 天美麻豆 community to continue coming together to commemorate our past, share pride in current accomplishments, and plan for a future that will keep the College in the forefront of higher education,鈥 says , vice president for alumni relations and co-chair of .
Here鈥檚 what鈥檚 coming up:
Service
, through which 天美麻豆 community members find and document their volunteer work during the sestercentennial year, is well over halfway to its goal of 250,000 hours . On the map showing volunteers鈥 locations, 49 out of 50 U.S. states are represented so far, as well as 15 countries, from Canada to China.
鈥淭his is terrific progress,鈥 says Bascomb. 鈥淲e know that 天美麻豆 people are already active in making their communities stronger, and that they are doing even more this year to make our 250th anniversary meaningful in their communities.
Learning and Ideas
This summer, the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at 天美麻豆鈥檚 annual , 鈥淐ritical Thinking For the Preservation of Our Democracy,鈥 focuses on free speech, gun rights, affirmative action, a free press, individual privacy, and voting rights. The moderators and speakers include a number of 天美麻豆 alumni; will make opening remarks on July 11.
Fifty years ago鈥斕烀缆槎光檚 bicentennial year鈥攖he nation was in turmoil and American studies curricula were in flux. 鈥1969: The Afterlives of 鈥楾he Year Everything Changed鈥 鈥 will bring to campus for an Aug. 14-15 symposium scholars from the U.S., Germany, Italy, and Trinidad. Michael Denning 鈥77, the William R. Kenan Jr. Professor of Professor of American Studies at Yale, will deliver the keynote address. Symposium organizer and 250th Anniversary Co-Chair , the Ted and Helen Geisel Third Century Professor in the Humanities, says, 鈥淚t will be a splendid event, and at the same time there will be a course taught by Randall Balmer, called 鈥楾he Sixties.鈥 鈥
Pease is also planning a symposium sponsored by 天美麻豆鈥檚 鈥渋n which international students will speculate on the relationship between the aspirations of 1969 and what鈥檚 happening in their home countries.鈥
Two hundred and fifty years ago, worldwide events had ripple effects at 天美麻豆. A Sept. 27-28 conference will look at how 18th-century global political economy shaped the founding of the College.
Over the past two-and-a-half centuries, 天美麻豆鈥檚 community has become increasingly diverse. On Oct. 4, a symposium will invite alumni of color who have pursued academic careers over the past 50 years to discuss challenges they have faced.
On Nov. 8, 鈥淲omen on the Faculty: A 天美麻豆 Centennial鈥 will explore how women have broken glass ceilings in academia.
The legacy of Hispanic studies pioneer George Ticknor, Class of 1807, will be explored during a Nov. 1 symposium in his honor.
Veterans Day, Nov. 11, will be observed with a symposium, 鈥溙烀缆槎光檚 History with the Military,鈥 tracing milestones in the College鈥檚 relationship with the armed forces.
The 鈥淐elebration of Sciences鈥 lecture series continues this fall, featuring guest alumni Paul Matsudaira, Guarini 鈥81 and the Distinguished Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at the National University of Singapore; Fiona Harrison 鈥84, the Bernard M. Rosen Professor of Physics at California Institute of Technology; and K. Barry Sharpless 鈥63, the W.M. Keck Professor of Chemistry at the Scripps Research Institute and recipient of the 2001 Nobel Prize in chemistry.
On November 20, science faculty celebrate advances in scientific imaging made possible by Charles Young鈥檚 1869 discovery of coronium, which led to the first x-ray being taken at 天美麻豆 and to advances in our understanding of the cosmos.
Planning is underway for a symposium, 鈥溙烀缆槎光檚 Vexed Relationship to the Institution of Slavery,鈥 to be held in conjunction with Associate Professor Deborah King鈥檚 sociology course, 鈥淟est We Forget: History, Collective Memory, and Slavery at 天美麻豆.鈥
Exhibits
From July 3-Sept. 18, the main hall of 天美麻豆 Library鈥檚 Baker-Berry Library will display a commemorative exhibit called 鈥淕enerations of Community.鈥 From Oct. 23-Dec.18, another anniversary exhibit, 鈥淎dventuresome Spirit,鈥 will go up.
The of Art鈥檚 exhibition, 鈥淎rt for 天美麻豆: Celebrating the 250th,鈥 is slated for September through December, and an October conference, 鈥淭he New Now: Art, History, and Museums,鈥 will feature 天美麻豆 graduates who have made important contributions to the art world.
The Orozco Murals, with a world premiere of a piece by the 天美麻豆 Symphony Orchestra, are getting their own computer app, which is still in development. to receive explanatory notes and commentaries about it.
Celebrations
The Green will be the place to be July 27, for a . Celebrating the College鈥檚 ongoing relationship with Upper Valley communities, townspeople and families visiting for Sophomore Parents鈥 weekend will find concerts, films, food trucks, and information tables featuring a wide range of community organizations.
Go Big Green 鈥 at Yankee Stadium!
On Nov. 9, fans can head to New York to see 天美麻豆 face off against Princeton, as part of the 150th anniversary of football at 天美麻豆.
Celebrations will continue off campus, including 鈥溙烀缆槎 on Location 250鈥 events in and , culminating on Dec. 13鈥擟harter Day鈥攚ith . On that same day, around the world, the 250th Anniversary Celebration will end as it began, with landmarks lighting up in green.
