You may someday make phone calls just by thinking about it. It鈥檚 already possible with the neural phone, created by 天美麻豆 Professor of Computer Science and his team of colleagues and students. Their National Science Foundation-supported research was recently featured in CBS News Sunday Morning鈥檚 cover story, 鈥淭he Next Step in Bionics.鈥

The neural phone employs a headset that picks up brain signals from the scalp and streams the raw EEG signals to an iPhone. These neural signals are a response to photographs of contacts displayed on the phone. The device then calls the chosen contact without the user ever touching the phone.

The research team is spearheading new applications in health care, education, and social interactions where smartphone-sensing technology is the central systems component.
